The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA) hosted a workshop on the EURATOM nuclear safeguards system and its implementation from 28 September to 2 October 2026. The event hosted by the HAEA and led by the Finnish nuclear authority (STUK). Representatives of the nuclear safeguards authorities of ten partner countries – Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Türkiye and Ukraine – as well as organisations involved in the implementation of the project and invited experts participated in the workshop.
Newly recruited nuclear safeguards inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) participated in practical training at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant from September 7 to 10, 2026. During the four-day training course, the inspectors received a comprehensive overview of the power plant’s technical characteristics, radiation protection regulations, and the national and facility-level accounting and control system for nuclear materials. In addition to theoretical training, the participants expanded their knowledge through several inspection exercises conducted in the plant's reactor hall. Simulating standard nuclear safeguards inspections, they performed inventory checks and measurements in the fresh fuel storage area and inspected spent fuel assemblies in the spent fuel pond. They also practiced the setup, maintenance, and installation of IAEA surveillance and containment devices. During the course, the inspectors visually examined the locations of nuclear materials as well as the potential routes for their movement inside the reactor building. The participants concluded the program by passing an examination.
The 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) took place in Vienna from September 14 to 18, 2026, with the participation of a delegation from the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA) led by President Andrea Beatrix Kádár. Every year, the event provides an opportunity for delegations from IAEA member states to hold bilateral and multilateral discussions and to organize thematic meetings.
The 56th plenary meeting of the Western European Nuclear Regulators' Association (WENRA) Working Group on Waste and Decommissioning (WGWD), which deals with the harmonisation of national regulations concerning the management, interim storage and disposal of spent fuel and radioactive waste, as well as the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, was held in Budapest from 21 to 25 September 2026. The event was hosted by the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA), while the Public Limited Company for Radioactive Waste Management (PURAM) hosted the site visit, as part of the programme. The meeting was attended by 30 representatives from 19 countries.
