ENSREG expert group visits Budapest Research Reactor with participation of Hungarian authorities

On May 23, 2024, the international expert group of European Nuclear Safety Regulators’ Group (ENSREG) visited the site of the Budapest Research Reactor. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the National Assessment Report prepared during the European Union’s Topical Peer Review II (TPR II) self-assessment process and related expert questions. Based on the visit, the experts could formulate and finalize their recommendations and identify good practices, which could be useful for other European Union member states. The topic of the visit, in line with the objectives of TPR II, was fire safety/fire protection issues, primarily in research reactor-type nuclear facilities.

International Conference on Nuclear Security in Vienna: Member States of IAEA reaffirm joint commitment

Two thousand experts from 130 countries attended the event of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held in Vienna on 20-24 May 2024 with the aim of reaffirming the joint commitment to strengthen nuclear security. The objective of nuclear security is to prevent, detect and respond to the malicious activities of terrorists or other groups which aim to obtain nuclear or other radioactive materials or to sabotage related technologies. The conference was attended by the delegation of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority.

Extended quadrilateral meeting hosted by Hungary in the spirit of constructive professional dialogue and cooperation

The traditional annual meeting of the leaders of the Czech, Hungarian, Slovak and Slovenian nuclear authorities organized this year by the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority took place on May 14-15, 2024 in Balatonfüred, Hungary. Partner authorities of Finland and Poland also participated in this year’s event. The Hungarian delegation was led by Andrea Beatrix Kádár, President of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority. The participants of the meeting presented the most important organizational and legislative changes affecting their regulatory activities, discussed the challenges of the existing national regulatory mechanisms, and reviewed the regulatory tasks related to the construction of new nuclear power plants, including small modular reactors. Additionally, representatives of the participating authorities gave an overview on events affecting the safety of supervised nuclear facilities and shared their experience of cooperation at both EU and international level.

IAEA inspector training in Hungary

The training of IAEA inspectors took place in Hungary between 6-10 May 2024, organized by the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority. Hungary is an active supporter of the IAEA nuclear safeguards system in three main areas: support for IAEA training activities, development of new equipment and technologies as well as testing of new instruments and equipment.

HAEA is preparing for an IRRS mission

In October 2025, the International Atomic Energy Agency will carry out the IRRS mission in Hungary to review the regulatory framework for the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy. As part of the preparation, IAEA experts held a workshop for the employees of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority and the participating organizations to support the the review process.
