Regional conference on insider threat mitigation at HAEA

The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA), together with the United States Department of Energy, the Belgian Federal Agency for Nuclear Control and the INFCIRC/908 international working group, organized a regional conference on insider threat mitigation, between 4th and 6th November 2025, at the HAEA headquarters. The event provided an opportunity for European experts to expand their knowledge, learn about good practices from other countries and develop regional cooperation in this specific area of nuclear security.

The Steering Committee of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) held its 150th meeting from 22-23 October 2025, in Paris, with the participation of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority. The event included a policy briefing on the application of advanced recycling and used fuel treatment, where experts of the field gave presentations to representatives of Member States on the prospects of technological options aimed at reducing the amount of radioactive waste.

IAEA Mission Reviews Hungary’s Nuclear and Radiation Safety Framework

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team of experts has found that Hungary demonstrates a strong commitment to nuclear and radiation safety. The team’s review, held from 6 to 17 October, found Hungary’s nuclear regulator to be in high compliance with IAEA safety standards, making it a competent and trusted regulator.

Hungary hosted its first Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ten years ago, with the follow-up mission taking place three years later, in 2018. In connection with the second full-scope IRRS mission, launched on 6 October, Mr Ramzi Jammal, Team Leader, provided an overview of the mission’s preparation and its practical implementation during the two-week review period in Hungary.

The International Atomic Energy Agency Integrated Regulatory Review Service to Hungary is underway

International experts through the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) arrived in Hungary to review the national nuclear regulatory framework. The international peer review takes place between 6 and 17 October 2025 in Budapest. The IRRS is an integrated approach to assessing the regulatory framework and the activities of regulatory bodies involved in the oversight of nuclear safety. The review was initiated by Ms Andrea Beatrix Kádár, President of the HAEA on behalf of Hungary.
