Newly recruited nuclear safeguards inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) participated in practical training at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant from September 7 to 10, 2026. During the four-day training course, the inspectors received a comprehensive overview of the power plant’s technical characteristics, radiation protection regulations, and the national and facility-level accounting and control system for nuclear materials. In addition to theoretical training, the participants expanded their knowledge through several inspection exercises conducted in the plant's reactor hall. Simulating standard nuclear safeguards inspections, they performed inventory checks and measurements in the fresh fuel storage area and inspected spent fuel assemblies in the spent fuel pond. They also practiced the setup, maintenance, and installation of IAEA surveillance and containment devices. During the course, the inspectors visually examined the locations of nuclear materials as well as the potential routes for their movement inside the reactor building. The participants concluded the program by passing an examination.
Staff members from the Safety Department of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant and the HAEA Nuclear Security, Non-proliferation and Emergency Preparedness and Response Department played an active role in the successful conduct of the training, for which the IAEA expressed its appreciation.
