Event on Licensing Small Modular Reactors Hosted by the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority

The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA) hosted an event on the licensing of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) for nuclear regulatory authorities from June 2–4, 2026, as part of the SPRING (SMR Pan-Regional Interest Nuclear Group) initiative supported by the U.S. Department of State.

As part of its preparations for the future regulatory licensing of SMR technologies, the HAEA participates in numerous events focused on presenting different SMR technologies and sharing licensing experience.

One such initiative is SPRING, whose objectives include familiarizing countries in Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia with regulatory and licensing experience related to U.S. SMR technologies.

During the event, participants shared their experiences with SMR licensing, discussed opportunities for collaboration between regulatory authorities, and provided information on the regulatory frameworks applicable to SMRs.
