The 70th annual regular session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be convened in Vienna from September 14 to 18, 2026. In connection with the General Conference - the IAEA’s highest decision-making body - a Scientific Forum will also be held on September 15–16, focusing on radiotherapy and diagnostics for cancer.
Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, launched the “Rays of Hope” initiative in 2022, which provides comprehensive assistance - including diagnostic imaging, radiotherapy, workforce development, and quality management - to help countries improve access to cancer care. Since its launch, the initiative has mobilized significant financial and technical support, contributed to strengthening national cancer care systems, delivered diagnostic and other essential equipment and training.
The 2026 Scientific Forum aims to showcase the impact of Rays of Hope and nuclear science and technology. It will also seek to improve access to essential, life-saving cancer care by building partnerships and highlight innovative approaches to mobilize resources towards Rays of Hope and the establishment, expansion and sustainability of radiation medicine services.
Throughout the week-long event, countries will also have the opportunity to hold bilateral and multilateral discussions and to further strengthen international cooperation in the nuclear sector.
The IAEA will provide a live webcast via its website, enabling all interested parties to follow the proceedings of the General Conference online. Details regarding the broadcast will be published on the opening day; the link can be accessed here.
